Do not shop without a shopping list prepared for exactly what you need. With a shopping list, it is easier to identify what is needed and avoid buying items on a whim. 2. Check out for bargains. Look out for items on sale. Spend time reading those flyers that are sent out to your house. You can save a lot of money by identifying good bargains. 3. Compare prices. This is perhaps the simplest way to save money on groceries. Make a list of commonly bought items in a notebook, then spend some time comparing prices between supermarkets and newspapers in your free time. 4. Scrutinise shopping cart before paying. Before you push your trolley to the counter, spend a minute to survey your trolley and eliminate the 'wants' from the 'needs'. You can discard the snacks, tidbits and premium food items. 5. Plan your shopping trips. Plan the timing of your trips to the supermarket to minimise fuel usage. Making two or three trips a week could easily be reduced to just one if you have a decent-sized refrigerator and a larder. 6. Plan your shopping routes. If you shop in more that one outlet to take advantage of differing prices, plan your route to save time and fuel. 7. Buy the store brand. The generic or store brand is always cheaper than other branded items, while the quality is usually not much different. Consider using the store brands if they can fulfil the same function. 8. Beware of devious marketing strategies. Many supermarkets display toys and other small items to entice shoppers even on aisles designated for items such as canned food, oil and rice. The purpose is to attract shoppers to impulsive shopping. Be aware of this strategy. 9. Loyalty programmes. Loyalty cards can be a double-edged sword. If there is a sale being organised for card members, identify the items you need to purchase beforehand and avoid buying anything else, even if it is cheaper than it usually is. 10. Read the labels. Take note of quantity as well as price. Some items may be packaged to appear to have more quantity than they actually hold. |
